Heir to Beauty

Amber Carroll

This work is the beginning of an exploration of ideas about beauty, sexuality, and femininity as seen by women in the African-American community.  I am interested in how black women acquire their personal sense of what it means to be an attractive woman, in a society where sex sells the media plays such a major role in shaping woman’s self-image.  That is not to debase the influence of a mother, older sister, or grandmother. There is something special shared between young girls and the women that raise them.  I am interested in the cyclical bond that these women share.  When a daughter looks at her mother she see where she has come from and where she is going.

I am drawn to the dialogue of admiration and succession that exists in the matriarchal heritage.  I tried to capture the exchange and preservation of womanhood that takes place in each of these relationships.  The models acknowledge their beauty and take ownership of their bodies.  They present elegance and grace as they perform for the camera, while photographs become a platform on which they invite the viewer to confront their illustration of beauty.
